Barling Road, Great Wakering

Start date: 9 May 2022

Duration: 20 weeks

Project manager: Dan French

Local delivery partner: JDT Utilities

Project overview

We are upgrading the gas pipes along Barling Road to ensure you continue to receive a reliable gas supply for many more years to come. Our aim is to replace all the metallic mains and service pipes in these locations. This means that we will need to excavate holes in the ground to access the gas pipes in order to inspect and replace them.

Due to the nature of the work involved, we have planned to deliver it in a number of phases to maximise efficiency and minimise disruption.

Project phases

Phase 1 - two weeks
Replace approximately 92m of existing gas pipe on Silchester Corner. This will be done under three-way temporary traffic lights.
Phase 2 - six weeks
Replace approximately 305m of existing gas pipe along Barling Road from outside property number 2 up to number 35. This will be carried out under a full road closure. Access will be given to residents living within the closure and a diversion will be in place for all other traffic.
Phase 3 - four weeks
Continue to replace approximately 220m of existing gas pipe along Barling Road from outside property number 35 up to the junction of Rebels Lane. This will be carried out under a full road closure. Access will be given to residents living within the closure and a diversion will be in place for all other traffic.
Phase 4 - seven weeks
Replace approximately 360m of existing gas pipe along Barling Road from the junction of Rebels Lane up to house number 128. This will be carried out under a full road closure. Access will be given to residents living within the closure and a diversion will be in place for all other traffic.

Project updates

23 September - 15:25

The work on Silcheser is currently underway and the Barling Road project is nearing an end. Reinstatement will be taking place throughout the week next week, and once complete, all temporary traffic management will be removed and the road will be reopened.

16 September - 15:00

This week, 75m of the new gas pipe was laid this week and we have upgraded service pipes to customer properties within this section. Next week we plan to decommission the gas pipe on Wednesday, customers affected by this work have been updated.

We are now nearing the end of the project with a few weeks left and hope to clear the road closure in a couple of weeks time. We will let you know when this is due to happen.

19 July - 13:50

This week we've completed the replacement of the next100m section of the existing gas pipe along with the service pipes to four properties.

12 July - 13:50

This week the team has been concentrating on replacing the service pipes that feed gas directly into properties within the current phase of work. Next week, they will begin work to replace the next 100m section of the existing gas pipe.

29 July - 13:50

This week we’ve continued working on replacing the pipes that feed gas into the properties within the current phase of work and the temporary traffic lights have now moved up the road to the junction of Revels Lane.

Residents between property number 39 and down to number 32 are now able to access their properties from Silchester Corner.

Next week the team will be working at the junction with Revels Lane.

21 July - 16:10

This week the team has been working on the smaller pipes that feed properties within the current section of work. We will update you again with progress next week.

4 July - 13:30

We have now replaced 122m of the new gas pipe along with the service pipes to two properties..

There have been safety concerns due to vehicles driving through the road closure. As a result, starting today a pass system will be in place. Vehicles will only be able to drive through the closure if they have a pass and show to the banksman.

Passes will be issued to residents where works are upcoming at their property. Residents where the works have gone past their property, will not get a pass.

24 June - 15:45

This week the team prepared an 80m open-cut trench ready for the new gas pipe to be inserted and replaced the service pipes that feed customer properties. Unfortunately there were some delays following the theft of the the teams excavator.

The plan for next week to lay 100m of the new gas pipe and and transfer services onto the pipe.

Please do not hesitate to get in touch if you have any queries.

17 June - 08:50

This week the team has concentrated on working on the services to customers properties. They have also created temporary access passes for residents within the works.

26 May - 13:00

We are back on track with our programme for this project. The team have commissioned approximately another 116m of new gas pipe taking the total now to approximately 220m. We will continue to excavate the trenches next week for the next section of main to be installed and will also start replacing the first service pipes to properties.

Reinstatement of the current excavations will take place over the weekend. This means our works within the current road closure will move along the road early next week and the road closure will remain in place.

We have allocated gateman at either end of the road closure to allow access to residents and refuse trucks.

20 May - 10:00

We have laid and commissioned our first 60m of the new gas pipe this week. We are slightly behind schedule as we’ve had to request an amendment to our design. This is due to finding the existing main running underneath the canopies of protected trees. Contact has been made with land registry in order to obtain approval to lay the new main in a different location.

9 May - 14:30

The project commenced began as planned. Our presence on site has been minimal, you can expect to see traffic management for the first phase of the project in place tomorrow. We will provide further updates as the team begins to mobilise on site.
