Project overview
We are upgrading the gas pipes along St Martins Lane to The Mall to ensure you continue to receive a reliable gas supply for many more years to come. Our aim is to replace all the metallic pipes with longer lasting plastic pipes. This means that we will need to excavate holes in the ground to access the gas pipes in order to inspect and replace them.
Due to the nature of the work involved, we have planned to deliver it in two phases to maximise efficiency and minimise disruption.

Project updates
28 February - 13:15
Work paused whilst the London Winter 2024 took place over the weekend. Since then, the team has re-dug the excavation on St Martin’s Place / the junction of Duncannon Street.
A new section of pipe will be inserted from outside the Coliseum Theatre, St Martin’s Lane, across the top of Trafalgar Square and along to Canada House.
Work on The Mall in front of the Admiralty Arch is also ongoing.
An excavation has been dug outside Canada House in Trafalgar Square / Junction of Cockspur Street ready for inserting a new section of pipe and the installation of a valve.
On Horse Guards Road, the footpath and verge have been backfilled and reinstated with the exception of a small section of pathway.
The work area at Horse Guards Parade has now also been backfilled and reinstated.

The section of the existing gas pipe from the Parade to the junction of The Mall has now been replaced.

Following the remobilisation of work in the new year, the team has been working in St Martins Lane and has begun digging excavations. Collaboration with surrounding theatres and stakeholders ongoing.
Work has also mobilised at Charing Cross Road / St Martins in the Field where excavations have been dug within the area of the road closure currently in place. The locations of the road closure and parking bay suspensions are detailed in the map below.
